Affordably exploring majestic Africa

Global travellers who yearn for affordable family adventure journeys to Africa can now reach this reality through the unique and trusted benefits of the newly-launched Explorer Club.

The peace-of-mind stems from the happy fact that it is the owners of several distinguished properties in Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Kenya who have forged The Explorer Club to create a few enticing adventure package tours for the start-up phase.

Properties featured at the outset include the five-star David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa, on the banks of the legendary Zambezi River near the Victoria Falls; Sausage Tree Camp with its stunning location in the Lower Zambezi National Park; Bumi Hills Safari Lodge and Spa, the iconic wildlife destination on Lake Kariba; Mowana Safari Lodge in one of the world's finest wildlife areas, Chobe National Park, Botswana; the exquisite Hemingway's Kenya Collection - the recently opened 45 roomed boutique hotel in Nairobi; the beach delight of Watamu and Ol Seki, the stylish tented safari camp in the famous Masai Mara Reserve.

Founder Steve McCormick, whose personal portfolio includes The David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa, Bumi Hills Safari Lodge and major activity operator Safari Par Excellence at Victoria Falls, said: "The Explorer Club is a specialist adventure package tour operator created by an alliance of trusted property owners to trim costs on a direct basis and offer international clients the opportunity to experience affordable luxury in Africa."He noted that last year (2013) was the bi-centenary of the birth of Africa's most famous explorer, Dr David Livingstone, and he wanted "modern families to keep exploring Livingstone's amazing Africa". It was the Scottish missionary who came across the mighty waterfall on the Zambezi River in 1855 and wrote: "Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight". He named them after his Queen and today, Victoria Falls is one of the acclaimed seven natural Wonders of the World and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"The area is unchallenged as Africa's adventure capital," said McCormick, "And will be at the heartbeat of The Explorer Club through the 77-room David Livingstone Safari Lodge & Spa at the edge of the Zambezi within sight of the spray of the falls."

The world's greatest living explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes, has endorsed The Explorer Club because it opens up genuine wildlife and adventure destinations to a large swathe of travellers who previously could not afford to make such dreams a reality.

Said McCormick, "From this launch-pad of core packages, we'll keep exploring the possibilities to delight our followers. We invite our guests to explore majestic Africa with us...and be amazed at just how affordable it can be."

Namibia moves to protect its wetlands

Namibia has designated its fifth Ramsar Site, 'Bwabwata–Okavango' in Bwabwata National Park. The site covers the lower Okavango River, part of the Okavango Delta Panhandle and permanently or temporarily flooded marshes and floodplains bordered by riparian forest and open woodland. It supports IUCN Red-Listed species, including elephant, hippopotamus, lion, slaty egret (all listed as vulnerable) and the endangered grey crowned crane and the critically endangered Eurasian bittern and Pel’s fishing owl. The site supports one of the highest diversities of species in the Zambezian Flooded Savannas ecoregion. Over 400 species of birds have been recorded, the highest number of any site in Namibia.

During the recent official launch of the Bwabwata-Okavango Ramsar Site, the Namibian Minister of Environment and Tourism Uahekua Herunga, announced that plans are underway to establish a draft national policy on wetlands and a National Committee on Wetlands.

Herunga said that the draft policy on wetlands will provide the policy framework and guidance to the management of wetlands. In addition, the Wetlands committee will act under the Ramsar Convention and spearhead the national wetland programme of the government.

The Ramsar Convention is one of the oldest international conventions, signed in 1971 in the City of Ramsar in Iran. The main focus of the convention then was to protect wetlands as habitats for birds. Since then, the scope and focus of the convention has expanded to include all aspects of wetland conservation and sustainable use.

Namibia became party to the convention in 1995 and listed four wetlands as wetlands of international importance. The newly-launched Ramsar is Namibia’s fifth site following other wetlands such the Orange River Mouth, Walvis Bay Lagoon, Sandwich Harbour and the Etosha Pan.

Herunga said other wetlands such as the Nyae-Nyae Pans, Kunene River Mouth, and the Kwando-Linyanti-Chobe-Zambezi systems are also good candidates for Ramsar listing. “In future we will focus our efforts in getting these wetland systems designated. Very soon I will direct my directors to identify other Ramsar sites countrywide,” he said.

He also highlighted the importance of wetlands saying they are valuable for all humanity but it seems as if most people do not recognise their value. “I say this because wetlands are being degraded on a daily basis mainly by human activities. It further seems to me that our communities do not appreciate the services provided by these ecosystems. We need to communicate the value of wetlands and the need for their conservation to the public. That is the responsibility of all of us and not only that of the government,” Herunga explained.

Tonga chiefs stand up against mining in Lower Zambezi NP

Lower Zambezi canoe safari - Image credit: 'No Mining in Lower Zambezi National Park' (Facebook page).

The Tonga Traditional Association has asked the Zambian Government to revoke the mining licence awarded to Mwembeshi Resources, a subsidiary of Zambezi Resources (Australia), to start a large-scale open cast mine in the Lower Zambezi National Park. The association president, Dickson Namanza, say it will interfere with the environment, culture, tradition and heritage for the people of Southern Province

Namanza said that the decision by the Minister of Lands and Environmental Protection, Harry Kalaba to allow mining was irrational and it lacked consultation with various stakeholders who among them included the traditional leadership in the area. Namanza said that his association was worried and concerned at the speed government was running to deplete the world’s heritage.

“We are concerned as people from Southern Province about the manoeuvre by the Minister of Lands Harry Kalaba to issue a mining licence in a National Park. We are wondering in whose interest they are issuing the licence? We ask this government to revoke the licence because it is not in the best interest of the people of Southern Province and Zambia in general,” Namanza said. He said that it was shocking that government was insisting on starting a mine in the national park at the expense of a thriving wildlife.

“The Lower Zambezi National Park is our pride as Zambians, it is our pride as the people of Southern Province and we see no reason why government should allow people to mine in this area. There should be no displacement of animals in that national park. Why can’t government ask the same investors to go to Munali Nickel mine in Mazabuka and continue with the mining project there rather than to start a new mine in the national park? We don’t want any further displacement of human beings and animals,” said Namanza.

“This is another fallen project by the [Government]; we shall not support it as it will destroy our tradition. That national park has a true meaning for the people of Southern Province and Western Zambia. We cannot compromise with our tradition. Let them go elsewhere with their money. We don’t need it,” said Namanza.

Safpar celebrate 25 years in the business

One of Southern Africa’s leading adventure travel groups, Safari Par Excellence (SafPar), have recently celebrated 25 years in the tourism industry.

Established in 1988, Safari Par Excellence secured a tender for Kayila lodge in Zambia’s remote Zambezi Valley. Building on the multi day canoeing trips that we were running in the Lower Zambezi, SafPar purchased a white water rafting license in 1993, running our first commercial trip in 1994. Since then SafPar has gone from strength to strength as an adventure company in Livingstone.

Zambezi Waterfront opened in 1999 on the banks of the Zambezi River in Livingstone. Since then other properties have been added to the SafPar portfolio, including the recently refurbished 4-star Thorntree River Lodge and the latest addition to the portfolio, the 5-star David Livingstone Safari Lodge and Spa. With these 3 properties, we have accommodation to suit all tastes and budgets –from camping up to 5-star luxury.

SafPar also owns and manages a variety of activities and our own fleet of transfer and 4x4 vehicles making us truly a ‘one stop shop’. We also have a range of activities to suit everyone from white water rafting for the adrenaline junkies, to a relaxing sunset cruise on our luxury 150–seater Lady Livingstone for those who prefer ‘soft’ adventure.

We recently celebrated our 25th Anniversary by hosting a party at Zambezi Waterfront and in true SafPar style partied until the early morning. With drinks flowing, our delicious new pizza’s being handed out all night and fantastic music from Kapiri Mposhi Top Rank Suite (a Lusaka band) the night was a hit for all involved. Founder Steve McCormick opened the speeches, followed by some amusing anecdotes from The River Club’s Peter Jones, who revealed some fantastic photos from the archives. Xen Vlahakis rounded things up.

We would like to extend our thanks to everyone who attended (and those of you who couldn’t make it) for making it such a fantastic celebration, especially those of you that travelled from afar – we wouldn’t be what we are without your invaluable support.

Here’s to 25 more years!

20 things you may not know about Victoria Falls

This year marks the 20th Birthday of Africa Albida Tourism’s flagship property, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, one of Zimbabwe’s most iconic hotels. Famous for the wide, expansive vistas and its on-site waterhole, Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has developed into an internationally acclaimed, award-winning hotel.

Kicking off the countdown for Victoria Falls Safari Lodge’s 20th birthday celebrations in December 2014, here are 20 things you may not know about Victoria Falls:

• Devil’s Cataract, on the Zimbabwe side of the Victoria Falls, has a drop of 60m, making it the lowest of the five Falls. Re-opened in August 2013, the Devil’s Cataract view point is a great vantage point from which to view the Falls. Be careful though, the steps are often wet and slippery!

• Because of the spray from the falls, the Rain Forest at Victoria Falls is the only place on earth where it rains 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, making it well and truly a ‘rainforest’.

• During a full moon, if the conditions are ideal, one can see a ‘moonbow’ also known as a lunar rainbow at Victoria Falls. Seen through the spray at night instead of during the day as a solar rainbow, the colour scheme and the shape of the curvature of the moonbow, are exactly the same as the beautiful rainbow seen in the day time.

• One can take a walk in the Zambezi National Park with the Victoria Falls Anti Poaching Unit (VFAPU), and support efforts to protect the wildlife and environment of Victoria Falls. Charles Brightman, a local safari operator and conservationist, together with the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, established the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit (VFAPU), in January 1999. VFAPU has worked in close co-operation with the National Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the Zimbabwe Republic Police, to achieve many successes.

• Described as an unforgettable African experience infused with mouth watering local cuisine, spirited dance performances and traditional storytelling. Baxton Mashuku and Joseph Nyangani, have been selling curios at the Boma since 2001. Caught wood-poaching by the VFAPU scouts in 2001, the gentlemen were offered the option of sourcing their wood sustainably and in exchange, would be able to sell their hand-crafted curios at The Boma - Place of Eating. They have been legally and sustainably selling curios for the past twelve years! These gentlemen are an amazing example of creating sustainable solutions that benefit the environment and the local community. You can find them every evening, come rain or shine at The Boma – Place of Eating.

• For the next 15 years, powered by Telecel, one of 1,8 million different colour possibilities will illuminate the Victoria Falls Bridge each night – it truly is a spectacle to behold!

• Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Spanning all corners of the Earth, the Grand Canyon, the Great Barrier Reef, the Harbour of Rio de Janeiro, Mount Everest, the Polar Aurora and the Paricutin volcano make up the remaining 6.

• In 1989, Victoria Falls was inscribed as a World Heritage Site. This means that Victoria Falls, as a World Heritage site, belongs to all peoples of the world.

• Taita falcons, one of the world’s rarest raptors, have been recorded nesting in the Victoria Falls gorge. Victoria Falls is home to other threatened bird species such as African Skimmers, rock pratincole, grey-headed parrot, Lilian's Llvebird, lappet-faced, hooded and white-backed vultures – so keep an eye-out and you may spot one of these threatened species.

• Stone artefacts from the hominin Homo habilis have been identified near the Falls and show that early humans may have lived here two million years ago.

• Victoria Falls Airport will be able to accommodate wide-body jets by mid 2014, thanks to the new 4 km runway currently being built. Catch sight of it as you come in for landing!

• Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, Victoria Falls Safari Club and the new Victoria Falls Safari Suites are all western facing, allowing guests the opportunity to enjoy splendid vistas of African sunsets.

• Victoria Falls hosts the annual Jameson Victoria Falls Carnival in December, the tough but inspiring, Econet Victoria Falls Marathon and 3 day Mountain Bike Challenge in June.

• The Zambezi River is the fourth longest river in Africa, after the Nile, Congo, and Niger Rivers.

• The Zambezi River flows through six countries, Zambia, Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.

• Victoria Falls lies almost half way along the Zambezi River in its 1677 mile stretch from its source to the Indian Ocean.

• The Africa Albida Tourism properties are the only properties in the area to have a no-fly zone above them.

• Victoria Falls is one and a half times wider and twice as high as Niagara.

• The Victoria Falls Bridge, completed in 1905 measures 650 feet in total length and stands 400 feet above the river, nearly 3,000 feet above sea level. Constructed by building anchored cantilevers from the edges of the gorge toward the centre, the bridge was considered a feat of engineering in its day.

• Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has recently been voted in the Top 25 Resorts and Safari Camps in Africa by Conde’ Nast Traveler – the only Zimbabwean property to be listed in this category.

>The Africa Albida Tourism collection also includes the chic, butler service Victoria Falls Safari Club, the RCI Gold Crown Resort, Lokuthula Lodges, the luxury Ngoma Safari Lodge in Chobe, Botswana, the a la carte MaKuwa-Kuwa restaurant and the enthralling Boma- Place of Eating. A new addition to the Africa Albida Tourism portfolio in December 2013, are the spacious Victoria Falls Safari Suites.

Congratulations and Happy 20th Birthday Victoria Falls Safari Lodge!

News from the Zambezi Queen

The Zambezi Queen (Chobe Botswana) and the Stanley & Livingstone Private Game Reserve (Victoria Falls Zimbabwe), both part of the exclusive Mantis Collection, not only featured in the January edition of leading lifestyle magazine House & Leisure, but also blew South Africa’s favourite celebrity, the inimitable Jeannie D, and Janez Vermeiren, away on the Top Travel Show.

The Zambezi Queen also held its own in the acclaimed DeKat Magazine where it was voted one of the three top properties to visit when travelling in Botswana, Namibia and Zambia. The Zambezi Queen also features in the Travel + Leisure Magazine’s 2014 World's Best Awards survey.

In line with the Mantis philosophy of keeping our products updated and fresh, the Zambezi Queen received a mild facelift in time for the New Year’s festivities and she was looking radiant for the important guests we hosted!

Our big news however for 2014 of course is the re-launch of the Pride of Zambezi which is undergoing a significant refurbishment during the months of January/February. Although we are keeping the extent of the changes closely guarded until mid-February, we can entice you with a mock-up image of what will surely be the most contemporary, fresh and modern looking vessel on the Chobe.

During December we hosted cellar master for Graham Beck Wines, Pieter Ferreira, on-board for our wine appreciation weekend.

Guests for this special departure included former President Thabo Mbeki who combined his stay on-board with the Stanley & Livingstone Private Game Reserve in Victoria Falls, highlighting this perfect combo-stay! Celebrity rugby player Tendai 'Beast' Mtawarira was also spotted here.

On an international platform our properties were universally well received at PURE Life Experiences that Kaila Roux attended in Marrakech. Kaila then joined Andre Barnard Jnr where they hosted social events in Barcelona, Milan and Amsterdam, attended by top operators selling Southern Africa. The two then stopped off in Paris to experience the city of lights between sales calls before Andre jetted off to Cannes for the ILTM.

Zambezi Queen receives World’s Best Boutique Cruise Award

During November 2013, Group Marketing Manager for Mantis Collection, Ignus le Roux collected the World’s Best Boutique Cruise award at the glamorous World Travel Awards ceremony held in Doha, Qatar for the Zambezi Queen. We are delighted to have received this for the second consecutive year!

Zambezi Queen’s guests get involved with local community

We get a real kick (no pun intended) when our guests get involved in the local community! Jenny Flournoy's children sponsored fantatstic soccer jerseys, shorts and socks recently, in honour of their parents' wedding anniversary, celebrated on-board the Zambezi Queen!

Community and conservation news from African Bush Camps

Hwange H20 Campaign Update - Umkawuzaan Solar Project up and running

In partnership with Elefence International, the installation of a solar panel and pump was completed in December 2013 at Umkawazaan Pan within the Somalisa Concession. Elefence International Director, Dick Houston was in Zimbabwe and on site when the installation was done. The pan is looking spectacular, the water is pumping, aiding the already good rains Hwange is experiencing, and the wildlife is already frequenting the waterhole.

In 2014 we look forward to further developing our partnership with Elefence International as we embark on developing more solar boreholes in the most desperate areas of Hwange National Park.

Mambanje Community Development and Solar Project

Mambanje Community is one of the most remote communities in the greater Hwange area but also in very close proximity to the National Park, making it a very vulnerable community with regards to human/animal conflict. We embarked on a large range of grassroots development projects with the community in 2013 including improving the grade 7 pass rate of the school (which went from 0% in 2012 to 15% in 2013), building adequate accommodation for teachers, building another classroom block so that each grade has its own classroom, and building a road to the community and school.

In 2014 African Bush Camps Foundation will continue with these developments and in addition have embarked on a new project in collaboration with Elefence International, to install a solar pump for the borehole and at the same time providing the school with solar power for the classrooms and the teachers accommodation. African Bush Camps Foundation is focused on sustainable development to ensure that the communities surrounding the National Parks are benefiting from the Tourism Dollar so as to preserve the area and its wildlife for future generations.

African Bush Camps Foundation - New Partnership

Thank you Pam Goosen and Mawabeni Designs for their support. The first round of new products using the Vukani Projects recycled beads are now ready for sale.

Vukani is a Ndebele word meaning 'to get up and do it for yourself.' This is a group of 14 men and women who are unemployed and have teamed up to engage in self-help income generating projects. The group is based in the village of Dete, just outside Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. They started with an organic gardening project and now also makes beads using recycled paper and fashions jewlery including bracelets, earrings and necklaces from these beautiful beads. The money they raise is used to help disadvantaged people in the group such as the widows and orphans who are under the care of the members. Beside the welfare of its members, the group is targeting to take care of two widows and 14 orphans and four disabled under the care of the group.

THE VUCHE VUCHE CRAFT PROJECT

The Vuche Vuche Basket Weaving Co-operative began in January 2011. The group was started by Maggie Zambo and a few other ladies and aimed to create employment for women who were either not employed or only employed on a part time basis, but who had financial obligations to their families, for example, educating their children. The group now consists of twenty ladies, some of whom are widows and having to take care of their families solely and others who are taking care of orphaned children or their elderly parents. The money earned helps with the building of their craft shop and the surplus is used for food and education for the ladies’ families.

Their materials are harvested from the bush around the nearby village of Satau and all dyes used are natural. By collecting these reeds it helps the growth of the plant, making it sustainable for the environment. It can take anywhere from three days to a month to create the baskets. At the moment, the ladies’ only market is self-drives who visit Chobe National Park or people who know about the group. They are hoping to expand this with the building of their craft shop and by selling their wares through African Bush Camps accommodations in Botswana & Zimbabwe.

Tourists help expand Jubalani School project

Tourists help expand Jubalani School project

Children In The Wilderness (CITW) is a non-profit organisation that aims to restore a sense of hope, ambition and the possibility of a bright & productive future to southern African youth. Within Zimbabwe, CITW have adopted 6 rural schools under their umbrella and with the help of donor funding, run a number of initiatives to assist children and their teachers and parents within their own milieu, such as school nutrition schemes& construction programs, village upliftment and scholarships. Jabulani Primary School is one such school, this small rural school has 214 students and is situated approximately 22km outside Victoria Falls. Unfortunately the facilities at the school are rather rudimentary and much is needed to cater for the growing student body. That said, the School Principal is a passionate & driven woman who takes great pride in her school.

The Rotary Club of Victoria Falls works closely with CITW on numerous programmes and recently referred visitors from Canada who wanted to make a difference to disadvantaged students. The ladies of Summerlea Golf Club in Canada were excited at the idea of helping Jabulani Primary School and with thanks to their fund raising benefits were able to send a generous donation.

It was decided to combine Summerlea’s funding with other donor funding received to add another two toilets to a project that originally would have included four toilets. The finished project will now comprise of 6 toilets– 3 girls and 3 boys. On behalf of the students of Jabulani Primary School, grateful thanks are extended to everyone involved.

Children in the Wilderness is supported by Wilderness Safaris.

African suppliers excited about inaugural WTM Africa

The inaugural World Travel Market Africa, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 2nd – 3rd May 2014 is attracting exhibitors from all categories of the leisure, luxury travel and meetings industries.

Well-known companies already signed up for the first WTM Africa including, Dreams 4 Africa, Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris, Brothers Safaris, Sunway Safaris and Cooks Air Tours and Safaris, all of which are crafters of tours and safaris in Southern Africa. Pan-African hotel brands will be gracing the CTICC and standing proud among them will be one of the largest hotel brands here in Sub Saharan Africa, the City Lodge Hotel Group.

With 55 hotels in South Africa, Kenya and Botswana, the City Lodge Hotel Group is a major supplier of quality hotel accommodation for business and leisure travellers. All of the group’s hotels are in excellent locations, providing easy access to business districts, major roads and airports.

“We are looking forward to participating in WTM Africa as it will give us an exciting opportunity to showcase our portfolio of hotels and and help us to continue to build relationships in the travel industry,” said Peter Schoeman, Divisional Director, Sales and Marketing, at the City Lodge Hotel Group.

Marketing representation company Dreams 4 Africa specialises in helping lodges and hotels build their brand in the industry. Mark Collins, Director said, “We are very excited to be part of WTM Africa as I think this will bring a fresh new energy to the Southern African region.”

Sarah Bauling, Marketing Manager of Bill Harrop’s “Original” Balloon Safaris added, “We are looking forward to meeting new potential buyers at WTM Africa as well as touching base with those with whom we are currently doing business.”

South African based Brothers Safaris, which offers tour operator services throughout Africa and specialise in behind-the-scenes wildlife safaris, is excited to be a part of the event. “WTM is an excellent marketing opportunity, new to the South African market and not to be missed in our opinion. We are hoping for a refreshing and successful experience when compared to the rather stale events currently in the African market,” said Rebecca Wood, Marketing Manager.

Exhibitors are looking forward to lucrative business discussions with the world’s leading travel industry buyers, including 300, pre-qualified, buyers from both emerging and traditional source markets who will be hosted by WTM Africa, many of these new to events in Africa. “For many years we have supported Reed Exhibitions and are disciples of the value-for-the-investment derived through the qualification process Reed Exhibitions puts into each event and the seller contingent drawn in,” said buyer Allan Falck, Executive Director, Sundance Tours, Argentina. “With African and Indian Ocean destinations looming larger with our client base WTM Africa is the one event we will support delivering new customers and new business to those WTM exhibitors.”

Fully supported by the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Government, the very first WTM Africa will be held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and the city is poised to host the biggest ‘fam trip’ it has ever seen with more than 4,500 visitors and exhibitors participating.

Sunway Safaris, Marketing Manager, Richard White added, “We are looking forward to exhibiting at WTM Africa as it offers a new and exciting platform to interact with international buyers. We believe that as the event is being hosted in the beautiful city of Cape Town, the location will attract new buyers to travel to South Africa to view the many amazing products that will be exhibiting.”

Pieter Mey, Managing Director of overland vehicle firm Indaba Explorations said, “We see WTM Africa as a great opportunity to showcase our services to the world and are proud to be exhibiting at the first ever WTM Africa. Tourism Africa needs a fresh new face and venue and this might well prove to be it.”

WTM Africa will be one of three co-located travel industry events at the Cape Town International Conference Centre (CTICC) that form Africa Travel Week 2014. The others will include IBTM Africa (Incentive, Business Travel & Meetings) and ILTM Africa (International Luxury Travel Market) which will take place from 28 - 30 April.

Africa Travel Week events are:

• ILTM Africa 28 – 30 April 2014
